Construction Update

 

First half of the Regional Bus Facility (LRT to old Wewatta St.)

Work is continuing on the interior of the bus facility with crews installing the electrical/mechanical rough-ins, concrete masonry unit (CMU) block walls and
fire protection.

Second half of the Regional Bus Facility (Wewatta St. to the West side of the
DUS building)

Excavation is nearing completion. Once the excavation is complete, crews will apply DirtGlue® to the large dirt pile. This will remain in place until the structure is ready to be backfilled. In the eastern portion of the excavation site, crews have begun to work on the substructures and drill shafts for the train bridges.

The teardrop planters have been constructed and now crews will begin to work on the granite seat walls. Work on the irrigation and signage foundations also will be done. Tree planting along 16th Street and Chestnut is complete for the calendar year. In addition, the glass exterior is being installed now in the Chestnut Pavilion.
Streets and Utilities
Installation of the 42″-storm sewer along Delgany St. from 15th St. to 16th St. has been completed. Motorists can now access 15th St. and southbound Wewatta St.16th St. between Wewatta St and Wynkoop St. will be under construction for the next several months. Xcel crews will be installing a steam line and Kiewit crews will be removing and reconstructing the roadway and sidewalks as well as removing and replacing light fixtures. The 16th Street FreeMall Ride Shuttle buses and pedestrian access will be shifting as work continues. Please use caution in the area and follow the instructions provided on the directional signage.

Changes to Parking in Front of Denver Union Station

As of Monday, November 14, 2011, motorists are unable to park in the DUS South lot in the row adjacent to 16th St. Crews will be installing a fence to designate the construction area work zone on 16th St. This row of parking will be unavailable through January 2012, at which time the entire lot will be closed.

Starting before the end of the year and lasting for approximately six weeks, parking will be unavailable in the DUS north lot on the row adjacent to the Ice House and the Rodizio Grill. During this time, crews will be installing a wall as part of the reconstruction of 18th St. Motorists will still have access to the parking area and to the parking garage throughout construction. However, the entire parking lot (excluding 18th St.) will close in January 2012.

Grand Illumination Event

The Downtown Denver Grand Illumination Event will light up the city from Denver Union Station to the City & County Building on Friday, November 25, 2011. Festivities at Denver Union Station begin at 6:00 p.m. and feature an evening of FREE holiday fun for the entire family, including music, a visit from Rockies mascot Dinger-Claus, complimentary refreshments, special guest speakers and a countdown to “light the lights” at approximately 6:30 p.m. Lightings at Larimer Square, Skyline Park, the Tabor Center, D&F Tower, Denver Pavilions and all along the 16th Street Mall will add even more magic to this unique evening. There also will be extended hours for viewing of the model railroad displays in the basement of Denver Union Station from 4:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

Insider tip: After celebrating at Denver Union Station, head South down the 16th Street Mall on RTD’s FREE MallRide to see more holiday lighting. You can exit the shuttle at Larimer Street, Arapahoe Street, Glenarm Street and finally at Civic Center Station for great views!
