Construction Update
First half of the Regional Bus Facility (LRT to old Wewatta St.)
Work continues in the interior of the bus facility with crews installing the electrical/ mechanical rough-ins and fire protection system. Framing for the skylights is also being installed. The concrete masonry block (CMU) construction nearly is complete.
Second half of the Regional Bus Facility (Wewatta St. to the West side of the
DUS building)
Crews began spraying the dirt pile with DirtGlue® and work should be completed before the holidays. Work is in progress on the substructures, elevator pits and lift stations. Crews are grading and pouring the “mud slab” as areas become available. This work should be completed in January. Crews will start the forms for the base slab on the east end of the building as sections of the mud slab are completed. The best place to see this work is from inside the historic Denver Union Station building from the west doors.
LRT Plaza
Crews will be installing the aggregate base for the concrete unit pavers that will be placed in the Plaza area. Work on the placement of the pavers will continue through the spring. Installation of the granite seat walls adjacent to the Chestnut Pavilion and louvers within the Pavilion will start this month. Additionally, work on the underground utilities for the 17th St. Gardens (north of the skylights) will begin.
Streets and Utilities
Work on 16th St. between Wewatta St and Wynkoop St. will begin December 19th and be ongoing for the next several months. Xcel crews will be installing a steam line and Kiewit crews will be removing and reconstructing the roadway, sidewalks as well as removing and replacing light fixtures. The 16th Street FreeMall Ride Shuttle buses and pedestrians access will be shifting as work continues. Please use caution in the area and follow the directional signage.
Crews will also begin constructing a retaining wall adjacent to the Ice House and Rodizio Grill at the end of the month. Access to the Grill will be maintained throughout construction.
Construction Impacts to Parking in Front of Denver Union Station
Construction activities will be moving to the front of the historic Denver Union Station building starting in late December 2011.
Reconstruction of 16th St. between Wewatta St. and Wynkoop St.
- Construction will begin December 19, 2011 and continue for several months
- The 16th St. FreeMall Shuttle service will be maintained
- Pedestrian access will be on the south side of 16th St.
Construction area for a retaining wall adjacent to the Ice House/Rodizio Grill
- Construction will begin in late December and last 4-6 weeks
- Access will be maintained to the Ice House garage
- Parking areas will closed on January 3, 2012
- Crews will be removing asphalt and building plaza areas
- Construction will continue until 2014
- The circle drive and sidewalk in front of DUS will close on January 3, 2012
- The drive will be removed and sidewalk rebuilt along Wynkoop St.
- Decorative bricks will be removed and replaced
- Access to the historic building will be maintained
Platte Valley & Western Model Railroad Club Holiday Open House
The Platte Valley & Western Model Railroad Club (www.PVWRR.org) located in the basement of Denver Union Station at 17th Street and Wynkoop in the LoDo section of downtown Denver announced today that it’s annual Holiday Open House on Saturday, Dec. 17th will include a book signing event by local Author Jennifer Petkus from 11am to 1pm. Petkus is the author of “Good Cop, Dead Cop” which opens in the basement of Denver Union Station.
The PV&W’s Holiday Open House is scheduled to run from 9am to 4pm on Saturday, Dec. 17th. The event is free however contributions to support the operations of the museum quality display are welcomed. Visitors should follow the signs from the train hall to the elevator and stairway to access the basement.
Even as work continues on the Denver Union Station Project, the club continues to have it’s doors open to the public each Friday night from 7pm to 9pm MT. On some Friday nights, trains may not be running due to maintenance of way activities as well as planned work projects.
The PV&W Model Railroad Club maintains a relaxed atmosphere, and the members are always happy to answer questions, demonstrate techniques and provide guidance to beginners in the hobby. In addition to building, maintaining and operating the railroads, the Club also actively participates in other railroading related activities.
